Windows Club Invented
1. In 1885
The first window was installed at the University of California Berkeley. It was designed by architect William Adams Delano who wanted to create a building that would have a modern look while still maintaining its historic roots. He created a design that had glass panes that were curved and sloped to allow natural light to enter the room.
2. In 1893
The first commercial use of window glass occurred in Chicago. A company called the Illinois Glass Company began producing double-pane glass windows. These windows were popular because they allowed people to enjoy fresh air without having to open their windows.
3. In 1896
The first skyscraper in America was built in New York City. The structure was known as the Equitable Life Assurance Society Building and stood at 30 stories tall. It was constructed using steel frames and contained over 1 million square feet of floor space.
4. In 1900
The first skyscraper taller than 100 meters (328 ft) was completed in Chicago. Known as the Home Insurance Building, it stood at 102 meters (335 ft).
5. In 1902
The first skyscraper to surpass 200 meters (656 ft) was built in Chicago. It was called the Wainwright Building and stood at 202 meters (663 ft).
6. In 1903
A fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. Over 140 workers died and many others were injured. The factory was illegally converted into apartments and no safety measures were taken. The fire led to the passage of the Factory Act of 1911 which mandated worker safety standards.
7. In 1905
The first skyscraper designed specifically for office uses was built in Chicago. Called the Monadnock Building, it stood at 90 meters (295 ft).
