What are the features of modem and types of modem

Characteristics of a modem

Are three very important characteristics of modem. These are transmission speed, error detection and correction, and compression.

The details of these three features are given below :

1. Transmission Speed

  • Modems are available in several transmission speeds, which are measured in bits per second.

  • The speed of a standard modem is 9600 BPS, 14400 BPS, 28000 BPS, 33600 BPS and 56800 BPS.

2. Error Detection and Correction

  • More cadmes these days use advanced error detection protocols at the hardware level.

  • Microcom Networking Protocol is used for error detection and resolution. This protocol was developed by Microcom. This allows errors to be identified and corrected due to noisy telephone connections.

  • ITU-T (International Telecommunication Standards Sector) is home to other protocols whose names begin with V (others known as V Dot standards.) Example V 34-28800 baud modem 14400 baud error control standard for fax

3. Compression

  • Due to the low transmission speed achieved by modems, most modems use a variety of dia-compression protocols.

  • Using these protocols can increase data transmission by about 50 percent.

Types of Modem

1. External Modem

An external modem is a box that keeps modern circuitry outside the computer system. It is connected to the computer system via a serial port, universal serial bus, or Fire Wire port, and to a telephone via a standard telephone jack. This type of modem is on the verge of extinction from the market.

2. Internal Model

An internal mother dem is a circuit board that is plugged into the expansion slot of a computer system. An advantage of an internal modem is that it does not take up space on the desktop, but uses an expansion slot. Nowadays, modems come in the form of PC work functions. These types of modems are used with wireless or mobile phones and provide wireless transmission.

3. Fax Modem Using

fax modem, you can send faxes from your computer as well as receive faxes from other computers. You can exchange faxed information with other fax modems or machines on the other end. One advantage of this is that you can modify and convert the information received by fax into files using appropriate software.
