Advantages and disadvantages of Fiber Optical Cable

Advantages of Fiber Optical Cable :

1. High Bandwidth 

Fiber optic cable supports much higher bandwidth than other cables. Currently, the data rate and bandwidth used over fiber optic is not limited, but the signal formation and available reception technology determine its limit.

2. Less Signal Attenuation 

The length of fiber optic transmission is other mediums. much longer than. The signal without regeneration can cover a distance of 50 kilometers on fiber optics. Whereas, for use of coaxial and twisted pair cables, a repeater is required every 5 km. 

3. Immunity to electromagnetic interference

Electro-magnetic interference has no effect on fiber optic cables. 

4. Light weight

fiber optics only weigh far less than copper cables. 

5. Greater Immunity to Tapping

Fiber optic cables copper cables by tapping. The copper only antenna creates the effect which easily can be tapped.

There are some advantages due to the use of fiber optic cable, but there are also some disadvantages in its use. Disadvantages of its use are:

Disadvantages of Fiber Optical Cable :

1. Installation and Maintenance 

This technology is relatively new so its installation and maintenance requires expertise which is not available everywhere

2. Unidirectional Light Propagation 

The direction of light is the same. If we need communication in two directions, then two fives are needed. 

3. Cost :

fiber optic cables and interfaces are higher than that of other wired media. If there is no demand for high capacity bandwidth then its use is not justified.
